Humane Access & Integrated Screening (HAIS)

A HAIS Program

Humane Access & Integrated Screening (HAIS)-Vet

Because every pet deserves humane care & utmost protection!

Protecting Pets. Empowering Owners. Improving Care.

Is your pet having a medical emergency right now? Contact your nearest emergency veterinary clinic immediately. This website is an educational resource and cannot provide emergency assistance.

About the project

HAIS-Vet is a pet-owner-led program of HAIS focused on improving humane access, triage, sedation transparency, and diagnostic pathways in veterinary care. It grew out of one owner's difficult experience with a pet's care including triage delays, sedation withheld over cost, and a missed diagnosis and a review of how often pet owners report similar patterns. These experiences are described in general terms; HAIS-Vet does not name or investigate specific clinics or veterinarians.

HAIS-Vet Program

Vision

A future where no pet owner is left confused, dismissed, or unable to advocate for their pet during a veterinary visit — and where clinics have practical tools to support that same transparency from their side.

Mission

To help pet owners across Canada navigate veterinary care with clear information, practical scripts, and an understanding of what to expect; particularly around triage, sedation, pain management, and cost transparency.

Values

Humane care — for pets and for the owners advocating for them

Transparency — in triage, sedation, and cost

Evidence-informed guidance — grounded in Canadian veterinary standards and published clinical research

Respect for the veterinary profession — built to work alongside clinics, not against them

What is HAIS-Vet?

HAIS-Vet is an educational, pet-owner-created, and free to use. It is not a regulatory body, an official complaint process, or affiliated with or endorsed by any provincial veterinary college. It is does not replace your veterinarian's professional judgment, legal advice, or emergency care.
